Workshop on security research and EUROPOL’s new mandate in Brussels

March 14, the Community for European Research and Innovation for Security held a workshop to discuss Europol’s new mandate for cooperation with research projects in Horizon Europe. One of the key amendments to the Europol Regulation consists in strengthening the role of the agency in the area of research and innovation by introducing new related tasks for the agency:

·  assisting the Commission in identifying key research themes, drawing up and implementing EU framework research programmes relevant to Europol's mandate (Article 4(a));

·  supporting Member States in relation to research and innovation activities relevant to the agency's objectives and implementing such activities, including the development, training, testing and validation of algorithms for the development of tools (Article 4(1)(t));

·  processing personal data for the purpose of research and innovation projects for the development, training, testing and validation of algorithms for the development of specific tools in the framework of an isolated IT environment – so-called Sandbox environment (article 18(2)(e) and article 33(a).

 Reinhard Kreissl participated in this workshop, representing the TRACE project.
